Pronunciation

A. Read the following passage and try to weaken the consonants in the red words. If you don’t have an idea what weak consonants are.

B. Weak consonants

In connected speech, some of the consonants in unstressed words sound weak and slightly different from their sound when we say them as single words

C. Funny game

Procedures

Get into groups according to the lines of your seats. 

Write down those consonants which are not weakened while teacher’s reading the paragraph with most – but not all – of the underlined words as weak forms. 

D. Report and compare your answers.

A. Read the information about intonation and then listen and write “↗” if the speaker’s voice rises at the end of a question, or “↘” if it falls. 

B. Loot at the following sentences with relevant information and read them with rising or falling tones. 

You will go to the cinema, won't you?   (ask a question)

Mary will marry next month, won't she? (ask a question)

 They went to the library, didn't they? (for confirmation)

Why don’t you call me? (emphasize “why” / me)

When will you come back? (for clarification)
