Conversation 1
Step1 Lead-in
a. Ask Ss to talk about their travelling experience;
b. Ask Ss to talk about the steps of booking;
c. Then ask Ss to discuss the following questions and then share your answers with the whole class;
Step 2 Prediction task. Ask students to predict what is going on in the photo.
Where is Mark?
What do you think he’s doing?
Who is he speaking to?
Where can you find a place like this in your town or city?
What kind of information is needed to complete the booking form?
Step 3 Go through the vocabulary list and students can be familiar with them.

Step 4 Language and culture
The Greyhound bus company is the largest North American bus company. It offers long- range bus services to over 3,800 destinations in the US, Canada and Mexico.
Upstate New York refers to the northern part of New York State. This area is known as a place for holiday breaks, honeymoons and outdoor activities with its lakes and mountains.
DC refers to Washington DC (the District of Columbia, which is a federal district — not a state). It is the capital of the United States of America.
Step 5 Detailed study of the video clip
Task 1: Watch Conversation 1 and complete the exercises.
Listen to the Conversation 1 three times. Before listening, ask Ss in pairs to choose a role each, and one is the travel assistant and the other is Mark. When the conversation is read for the first time, ask the pairs to listen carefully according to their roles and take notes if necessary. When the conversation is read for the second time, ask Ss to do a role-play to fill in the information. When the conversation is read for the third time, check out the answers.
Task 2: Watch Conversation 1 again and answer the questions. After that, students are required to retell the Conversation 1 in their own words.

Conversation 2
Step 1 Warming-up activity
Work in pairs. Look at the list of some places in the US and say where you would most like to visit.
Ss will be divided into two large groups. Four of the following places will be given to one group and the remaining ones to the other; Find out and discuss the features of each place and their favourite attractions in groups or in pairs within each team; Two opposite teams will debate which place is the best to visit and why. The reasons for a visit may include historical or cultural interests; entertainment; outdoor activities and scenery, or simply because a place is famous and not-to-be-missed on a visit.

When the conversation is read for the second time, ask Ss to complete the sentences. When the conversation is read for the last time, check out the answers.

Step 5 Work in pairs and act out the conversation
Student A You’re a travel agent. Ask how you can help your customer.
Student B Explain where you’d like to go and how you want to travel.
Student A Ask for details about dates of travel and other preferences.
Student B Give details about dates of travel and answer questions about your other
preferences.
Student A Make polite conversation and ask what Student B is planning to do.
Student B Tell Student A what your plans are.
Student A Ask if Student B needs any accommodation.
Student B Say what accommodation you need, and give your preferences.
Student A Confirm the arrangements with Student B.
Student B Thank Student A and ask about the price.
