Key:
The language used in Twain’s books is colloquial, concrete and direct in effect, and his sentence structures are simple, even ungrammatical, which is typical of the spoken language. And Twain skillfully used the colloquialism to cast his protagonists in their everyday life. A Huck, speaking vernacular, running away from civilization for his freedom, is vividly brought to life.
Twain is also known as a local colorist. He successfully used local color and historical settings to illustrate and shed light on the contemporary society. The rich material of his boyhood experience on the Mississippi valley and the West becomes his major theme. Huck’s Mississippi River, originally as escape from what may now seem some of the simpler strictures of society, continues to serve the American psyche as an imaginative alternative to modern civilization. Twain, who knew the river intimately, uses it here both realistically and symbolically. The shape given to it by the course of the raft’s journey down the Mississippi as Huck and Jim seeks their different kinds of freedom.
