We often travel by plane for it is very convenient and saves time. In order to get on the plane without difficulty, here are some useful expressions for us to learn.

First, let’s learn some new words and expressions.

Second, let’s learn some steps of travelling by plane.

1. Buying tickets

You can book a ticket online or you can go to the airport to buy your ticket.

Now let’s listen to the conversation. (conversations1)

Conversation 1: Making an Airline Reservation

A: Good morning, International Airlines. Can I help you?

B: Yes, I'd like to know about the flight to New York. Is that a non-stop flight?

A: It's a direct flight.

B: Great ! How long will the flight take?

A: It's about thirteen hours.

B:Oh, no. It's a little too long. Whatever, I want to reserve one ticket to New York, please.

A: For what day, Miss?

B:Next Friday.

A: That's July 4th. Yes, we have flights at 10 a. m. and 6 p. m..

B:I prefer a morning flight. By the way, what is the flight number?

A: It is CA981.

A: How do you wish to fly, economy or first class? And window seats or aisle seats?

B:Economy and aisle seats, please.

A: All right. Will you pay in cash or by credit card?

B:By credit card.

A: Good, may I have your name, please?

B: It's Zhou Xin.

A: Thank you. I've booked you one ticket to New York on International Airlines, flight number CA981 leaves at 10 a. m. , the 4th of July. Please confirm your scats three days before departure.

B:Yes, I will. Thank you very much.

2. Check-in 

After you bought the ticket, next thing you should do is to check-in.

Let’s learn some useful expressions.

 

 Now listen to the following dialogue. (Conversation2)

Conversation 2: Check in

A: Excuse me, Miss.

Q:Yes. What can I do for you?

A: Could you tell me how I can check in?

Q:May I take a look at your ticket?

A: Yes, of course. Wait a minute... Here it is.

Q:You can go to Counter 14. It is over there.

A: Er, I see. Thank you very much.

A: Excuse me. Is this the right counter to check in for this flight?

Q:Yee, it is. May I see your passport. please?

A: Sure, here you are.

Q:Are you checking baggage or carrying on?

A: Oh, I want to check two luggages.

Q: Please put your luggage on the belt。

A: OK

Q: Well, 22.9 pounds.  Is there anything breakable in it?

A: No.

Q:This is your luggage claim ticket.

A:Where and when can I claim the luggage?

Q:At the luggage claim office after you get off the plane. Your luggage will be there when you arrive.

A: Thank you. What about this carry-on?

Q:You can take that with you.

A:Can I have an aisle seat, please?

Q:No problem. I will give you an aisle seat in the center row.

Q:And here's your ticket, passport and boarding pass. Please board the plane at Gate 15.

A:Thank you, and when is the latest time for me to board the plane?

Q:50 minuter before the plane takes off. The plane is scheduled to leave on time.

A:Thank you very much.

Q:You're welcome. Have a nice flight.

 

3. Security check

After the check-in, you need to pass the security check, Part I安检(行李检查和过探测门)luggage security check and pass the Detector, here are some useful sentences:

1.Please pass through the detector one by one. 请一个一个通过探测门。

2.Put your baggage on the belt please您好,请把您的包放在传送带上。

3.Please put all your metallic objects in the basket.

请把您随身携带的所有金属物品放入篮子中。 

4.Please take your computer out and put it in the basket. 对不起,先生,请把您的电脑从包里取出放入筐里。

5. Anything else in your pocket?口袋里还有其它物品吗?

6. Flammable items cannot be taken with you into the aircraft.

易燃品不能随身带上飞机。

 

Now let’s listen to a conversation (conversation3)

 

Q: Please put all carry-on luggages in a basket and then place it on the belt. Step right this way.  

A: Should I take off my jacket too?

Q: Yes. And would you mind opening your lap top?

 A: No. not at all.

Q: Thank you. Please take off your shoes too.

 A: Okay.

 Q: Thank you.

Part II安检(工作人员手检)check by the staff of the airport. here are some useful sentences:

1.Please come over for inspection.

  请过来接受检查。

2.Please raise your arms.请您抬起双臂。

3.Turn around please.请转身。

4.Please unbutton your coat请把您的衣扣打开。

5.I’m sorry to tell you that it is a prohibited item. You can’t take it with you into the aircraft.

    很抱歉告诉您,这是违禁品,您不能把它带上飞机。

6.Checking is done, thank you for your corporation.

    检查完毕,谢谢合作。

7.You can take your baggage now.

   您可以拿行李了

Now let’s listen to a conversation (conversation4)

Q:Please come over for inspection.

A:OK.

Q: Raise your arms./Turn around.

Q: Checking is done, thank you for your corporation.You can take your baggage now.

A: Ok, Goodbye.

 

 

 

4. At the departure terminal

After you pass the security check, you will arrive at the departure terminal, here are some duty free shops and restaurants. You can go shopping and eating. Now let’ listen to a dialogue. (conversation 5)

 

Q: What would you like to buy?

A: Chanel perfume. I heard it's very    cheap there.

Q: Yes, of course, it is tax free.

A: Two bottles, Please.

Q: I need your Passport and ticket.

A: Yes, here you are.

Q:What’s your final destination?

A: Beijing.

Q: OK, 200 dollars, Please.

 

 

5. Boarding

After you finish all this, you just need to wait for boarding, you need pay attention to the broadcast, the standard form of an airport broadcast is :

1. Ladies and Gentlemen, may I have your attention please:flight_A128___to__NY__ is now boarding. Would you please have your Passport and boarding passes ready and board the aircraft through gate NO. 3.We wish you a pleasant journey .Thank you.

2. This is the last call for Flight BA 827 for Rome and Athens. Would passengers who have not yet checked in please report immediately to Check in Counter 27,and then proceed to Passport Control,and afterwards to Gate 30

3. Passengers for Flight B 811 from HK to London,.We are sorry to inform you that your fight will be delay because of the weather,and the new departure time will be known later.Please wait in the waiting room.We are very sorry for any inconvenience

Q: Ticket and passport?

A:Yes.

Q: ok,Have a great flight.Bye!

A:Bye!

 

6. When you are on the plane, maybe you will feel sick, and you can ask:

I feel sick.  Can I get the airsick bag please?

Shall I have some water?

Could I have a blanket to keep warm?

 

7. At the international arrival, custom

When you are off the plane, if you travel abroad, you will be at the immigration , reality, preciseness and honest are needed when you answer the questions ,now listen to the dialogue: (conversation7)

A: Next, please. May I see your passport?

B: Of course. Here you are.

A:Uh, what is the purpose of your visit?

B:I will be a student in Columbia University. And I'm here to work on a master's degree in literature.

A:I see. May I take a look at your F-1 Visa and I-20.

B:OK. Here you are.

A:And where will you be staying?

B:I'll be staying in Columbia University Guesthouse first.

A:How long will you be staying in the US?

B:About two years.

A:How much money do you have with you?

B:I have 1000 US dollars.

A:Have a nice stay.

8. Baggage claim

The last thing to do at the airport is to claim your baggage and check the claim tag whether it is yours. now listen to the dialogue: (conversation8)

Q:Where can I get my baggages?

A:You can get your baggages in the baggage claim area. It is next to the Candy shop.

Q: Thank you very much.
