Content

When we are sick, we will go to the hospital to see the doctor. So it is quite necessary to learn some words and sentences which are frequently used.

First, we should know what doctor we need to see, lets see new words used in the hospital.

Doctors

Herb Doctor中医师

Heart branch doctor心脏科医生

general practitioner   全科医师

medical specialist专科医生

physician (internist)  内科医生

surgeon 外科医生

dentist牙医

psychologist 心理医生

pediatrician  /piːdɪə’trɪʃn/儿科医生

pharmacist药剂师

and we also need to know the names of some common diseases:

cancer        癌症                                flu              流感

cold          感冒;伤风                        chicken pox        水痘

diabetes       糖尿病                               insanity        精神病

headache       头痛                               malnutrition      营养不良

indigestion    消化不良                            a sore throat      喉咙酸痛

now lets learn some new words and expressions related to Medicine

fill a prescription配药have a prescription made up(filled)(患者)抓药

tablet 药片pill 药丸

heal with drugs 药物医治drug allergy 药物过敏

and next is the manes of some medical departments

registration office 挂号处out-patient department 门诊部

in-patient department 住院部nursing department 护理部

consulting room 诊室waiting room 候诊室

emergency room 急诊室admitting office 住院处

operation room 手术室pharmacy 药房

ward 病房laboratory 化验室

 

 

Second, before going to see the doctor,we usually make an appointment in advance:

Now, lets listen to a conversation:

Nurse: Good morning. This is Doctor Johnson's office.What can I do for you?

Mrs. Reed: Yes, this is Mrs. Reed. I'd like to make an appointment to see the doctor this week.

Nurse: Well, let's see. I'm afraid he is fully booked on Monday and Tuesday.

Mrs. Reed: How about Thursday?

Nurse: Sorry, but I have to say he is also occupied on Thursday. So, will Wednesday be O.K. for you, Mrs. Reed?

Mrs. Reed: I have to work on Wednesday. By the way, is Dr. Johnson available on Saturday?

Nurse: I'm afraid the office is closed on weekends.

Mrs. Reed: Well, what about Friday?

Nurse: Friday. Let me have a check.

Oh, great. Dr. Johnson will be available on Friday afternoon this week.

Mrs. Reed: That's fine. Thank you, I'll come then.

 

Third, while seeing the doctor, the doctor may ask for our health condition like this:

1. What's wrong/the matter (with you)?     你怎么了?

2. What's your trouble, young man?    年轻人, 你哪里不舒服?

3. When did it start?     从何时开始生病的?

4. How are you (feeling) now? 你现在觉得怎么样?

5. Are you feeling better today? 你今天好些了吗?  

6. Have you got a headache/a cough?     你头痛/咳嗽吗?

7. When did you feel unwell?     你什么时候觉得不舒服的?

8. When did the pain start? 疼痛何时开始的?

9. Did you sleep well? 你睡得好吗?

10. Do you feel tired? 你觉得疲劳吗?

11. How long have you been like this?     你像这样有多久了?

12. Did you eat anything for breakfast?    你早饭吃了什么没有?

And we can use the following sentences to give our answers.

1. I don't feel very well. / I'm not feeling well.      我感到不舒服。

2. I have (got) a headache. 我头痛。

I have a sore throat. 我嗓子痛。

I have a backache. / I have a pain in my back.    我后背痛。

There's something wrong with my leg.     我的腿有毛病了。

3. I feel terrible. 我感到很难受。

I feel even worse. 我感到情况更糟了.

4. I don't feel like eating anything.   我什么都不想吃.

5. I dream too much. 我的梦特别多.

I can't fall / be asleep in the evening.    晚上我睡不着.

6. It began two days ago.    两天前开始的.

7. I don't feel any better now.     我感觉没有什么好转.

8. I had noodles for lunch today.   今天午饭我吃的是面条.

 

Moreover, we should also be familiar with some sentences the doctor frequently uses in the process of inspection, diagnosis and treatment.

1. Open your mouth and say "Ah---'. 张嘴说"啊---- ".

2. Let me take your temperature. 让我给你量量体温.

3. There's nothing much wrong / serious with you.你没什么大问题.

4. You have got a bad cold. 你患了重感冒.

5. You have to be in hospital. 你得住院.

6. You'd better stay in bed for a few days.    你最好卧床几天.

You'd better not eat too much sugar.    你最好别吃太多的糖.

Eat less food and take more exercise. If you do that, you'll feel much healthier.

少吃些,多锻炼,不久你的身体就会健康得多.

You should drink a lot of water. 你应该多喝水。

Have a good rest. 好好休息.

7. Take one of these pills twice a day. 这些药每次服一片,每天两次.

Take the medicine after meals.  饭后服药.

8. You'll soon be all right.    你很快就会康复的.

I hope you feel better soon.    我希望你很快就会好起来。

Try to relax before you go to sleep.   睡觉前尽量放松一下。

 

Now, lets listen to a conversation:

D=Doctor; P=Patient

D: What’s the matter with you?

P: I’ve got a pain in my back.

D: How long have you been like this?

P: For about two days.

D: Please show me where it hurts.

P: Here. A little up there.

D: It’s nothing serious. You muscle aches.

Put a hot towel on it for three minutes three times every day.

 

Now well listen to several dialogues and review some basic steps of seeing a doctor.

1. Making an appointment

R= Receptionist P= Patient

R: Doctor Ruth's office, may I help you?

接待员:鲁思医生办公室,我可以为您服务吗?

P: Yes, I'd like to make an appointment to see the doctor. My name is Randy Horn.

病人:你好啊,我想和医生约诊。我叫兰迪·合恩。

R: Let's see, Mr. Horn... The doctor's schedule is full today. Would tomorrow be all right?

接待员:我看看,合恩先生……今天医生的时间表已排满了。明天可以吗?

P: Yeah, I guess I can survive until tomorrow.

病人:可以,我想我还可以活到明天。

R: Would you prefer to come in in the morning or the afternoon?

接待员:您要在上午过来还是下午呢?

P: In the morning, if possible.

病人:可能的话,在上午。

R: The doctor has an opening at 10:30 tomorrow. I'll put you down for then.

接待员:医生明天上午10:30开始看病,我会把您安排在那个时候。

P: That would be fine.

病人:那就好。

R: Okay, Mr. Horn, see you tomorrow at 10:30. (to be continued)

2. Seeing the doctor

P: Hi, my name is Randy Horn I have an appointment to see the doctor at 10:30.

病人:嗨,我是兰迪·合恩。我和医生约好10:30要看病。

R:If you'll please take a seat, Mr. Horn, the doctor will be ready to see you shortly. ( Ten minutes later) Mr. Horn? The doctor will see you now.

接待员:请坐,合恩先生,医生会很快看您的病。(10分钟之后)合恩先生?医生现在要看您的病了。

D: Hi, Randy, what seems to be the trouble?

医生:嗨,兰迪,哪里不舒服呢?

P: I've got a really bad sore throat and my head hurts. My muscles ache and I have no energy.

D: Let me take your temperature. Let's see... 101 degrees. You're running a fever. Let me take a look at that throat. Open up and say " ah. "

3. Having a cold

D= Doctor P= Patient

The doctor has finished examining Randy, her patient.

医生为她的病人兰迪完成了检查。

D: Well, Randy, I'd say you've got a bad case of the flu. The main thing to do is get plenty of rest and drink lots of liquids. I'll prescribe something for that throat.

医生:嗯,兰迪,你患了重感冒,你所要做的事便是多休息和多喝水,我会开些处方治你的喉咙。

P: Thanks, doctor. Is there anything I can take for this headache?

病人:谢谢医生。我能吃什么药治疗头疼呢?

D: Some aspirin or Panadol should help. You can pick some up at the pharmacy when you go to fill your preion.

医生:吃一些阿司匹林或扑热息痛应该会有帮助。你在去药房拿药时可以买一些。

P: Okay.

病人:好的。

D: Goodbye, Randy. Take care.

医生:再见,兰迪,保重。

 

4. Prescription

P= Pharmacist C= Customer

P: Good afternoon, sir. What can I do for you?

药剂师:先生,午安。我能为您服务吗?

C: I'd like to get this prescription filled.

病患:我要配这张处方。

P: No problem. Please wait a minute. (She goes to the back for a few minutes. ) Here is your medicine, sir. Take two tablets after each meal and once before bed.

药剂师:没问题,请等一下。(她到后面几分种。)先生,这是您的药,每餐饭后和睡前各吃两颗。

C: Thanks. Do you sell aspirin here?

病患:谢谢。你们这里卖阿司匹林吗?

P: Yes, our over-the-counter medicine is over there on that shelf.

药剂师:有的,我们不需要医师处方的药就在那边的架上。

C: Oh, I see it. Do you have multi-vitamins?

病患:唔,我看看。你们有多种维生素吗?

P: Yes, right over here.

药剂师:有的,就在这里。

( The customer gets the aspirin and vitamins. )

P: That'll be $16.00.

药剂师:一共16元。

C: Here's a twenty.

病患:这是20元。

P: Here's your change. Thank you.
