From tree topaper- How it’s made
The basic rawmaterial for making paper is wood. To begin, pulp wood logs are passed throughdebarking drum, in which they collide and rubber together, removing the bark. Thebark is collected and burned as fuel in power boilers. The debarked logsare then conveyed to a chipper, which reduces them to small pieces. The chipsare loaded into large vessels called digesters, where the steam under pressureuntil the mixture was reduced to a wet of milk like pulp. The cooking removesunwanted substances and frees the wood fibers so they can be suspended in a ratioof 200 parts water to one part fiber. This furnish as it’s called is run onto afast moving mesh screen loop. As the water is extracted, the fibers form a matof paper. The paper is pressed and passed through steam heated drying cylinders, where the last of the water is removed. A starch solution seals the paper’ssurface to prevent excessive ink absorption during printing. Calendaringprovides a smooth finish by ironing the sheets between heavy polished rollers. The paper is wound onto a great scroll to form a machine reel and then rewoundand cut into smaller rolls. Some of these rolls are wrapped for shipment, others are sent for shielding and packing.
