Language and Culture

Categoriesof cultural connotations

ØWhenwe study the cultural connotations, we can roughly divide words into threecategories based on their similarities and differences.ØWeuse “c” to represent “connotation”, “C” and “E” for “Chinese” an “English”.

1)cC=cE

Inthis categories, the Chinese and English word have the similar connotation.

      2)cC≠cE

Manyword in two language appear to have the same meaning, but actually theirconnotations are totally different.

      3)cC=0,cE≠0,or cC≠0,cE=0

Connotationsof words in one culture seem to lack equivalences in the other.
