Abstract is a short passage placed before the main text. It presents many important information of the study to readers. 

Some busy readers only read the abstract of a article to get the gist of the study.  Some readers in some less-developed areas may only have access to the abstract of some articles. 

So, compared to the full-text, an abstract is more like an advertisement of the study.
