2. Rev. Arthur Dimmesdale阿瑟·丁梅斯代尔牧师
Arthur is the Reverend in charge of theBostoncongregation. However, all of his backgroundpreparation was not enough to keep him from falling in love with Hester Prynne.They become lovers and create a child, Pearl.Dimmesdale is a conflicted man. He wants to lead his congregation, butconsiders himself a sinner. Moreover, he is the religious “father” of hiscommunity, but will not even acknowledge his own child. As Dimmesdale’sreputation as a minister grows, his internal conflict increases, which leads tohis physical and mental deterioration.
Symbolism of the character’s name
v Theinitials AD are the beginning of “Adultery”;
He commitsadultery but dares cowardly to confess his sin or crime, and has to conceal it inthe shadow and suffer it interiorly.
v “Dim”means lack of light; “dale” means valley;
It symbolizes the minister’s dim-interiorworld of his love and the shadow of sin and guilty of his mind.
3. RogerChillingworth罗格·齐灵渥斯
Roger is mucholder than Hester, and shortly after their marriage, he sent his young bride tothe colonies to await his arrival. However, he never arrived, and was presumedby many to be lost at sea. In reality, he did not perish at sea; though he wasin a shipwreck, he was captured by Native Americans and held captive by them.When he finally arrives in Boston,he finds out that his young wife has been unfaithful. Not only does Hester havea child that cannot be his, but she is being publicly shamed for her role as anadulteress. He wants revenge upon his wife and her lover, whose identity he isobsessed with discovering. He decides to stay in Boston, taking on the role of town doctor.
