The 1936 Summer Olympics
The 1936 Summer Olympicswas an international multi-sport event that was held in 1936 in Berlin, Germany. The games were the first to be televised, and radio broadcasts reached 41countries. Filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl was commissioned by the German OlympicCommittee to film the Games for $7 million. Her film, titled Olympia, pioneeredmany of the techniques now common in the filming of sports.
Reich Chancellor AdolfHitler saw the Games as an opportunity to promote his government and ideals ofracial supremacy, and it was laid down in the official Nazi party paper thatJews should not be allowed to participate in the Games. When threatened with aboycott of the Games by other nations, Hitler appeared to allow athletes ofother ethnicities from other countries to participate. However, German Jewishathletes were barred or prevented from taking part by a variety of methods andJewish athletes from other countries (notably the US) seem to have beenside-lined in order not to offend the Nazi government.
The host country was themost successful country overall with 89 medals total, with the United Statescoming in second with 56 medals. These were the final Olympic Games for 12years because of World War II. The next Olympic Games would not be held until1948.
Jesse Owens
Owens (1914–1980) wasthe youngest of ten children, three girls and seven boys, born to HenryCleveland Owens and Mary Emma Fitzgerald in Oakville, Alabama. At nine, hemoved with the family to Cleveland, Ohio, for better opportunities. When hisnew teacher asked his name (to enter in her roll book), he said “J.C.”, butbecause of his strong Southern accent, she thought he said “Jesse”. The namestuck, and he was known as Jesse Owens for the rest of his life.
As a boy, Owens tookdifferent jobs in his spare time and realized that he had a passion forrunning. Throughout his life, Owens attributed the success of his athleticcareer to the encouragement of Charles Riley, his junior high track coach atFairmount Junior High School.
Owens and Minnie RuthSolomon (1915–2001) met at Fairmont Junior High School in Cleveland when he was15 and she was 13. They dated steadily through high school. Ruth gave birth totheir first daughter, Gloria, in 1932. They married on July 5, 1935 and had twomore daughters together: Marlene, born in 1937, and Beverly, born in 1940. Theyremained married until his death in 1980.
Owens first came tonational attention when he was a student of East Technical High School inCleveland; he equaled the world record of 9.4 seconds in the 100-yard(91 m) dash and long-jumped 24 feet 9 1⁄2 inches (7.56meters) at the 1933 National High School Championship in Chicago.
Owens attended The OhioState University and under the coaching of Larry Snyder, Owens enjoyed athleticsuccess. His greatest achievement came in a span of45 minutes on May 25, 1935, during the Big Ten meet at Ferry Field in AnnArbor, Michigan, where he set three world records (long jump, 220-yard sprint, and 220-yard low hurdles) and tied a fourth (100-yard dash).
In 1936, Owens and hisUnited States teammates arrived in Berlin to compete at the Summer Olympics. Owens’success at the games represented an unpleasant consternation for Adolf Hitler, who and other government officials had high hopes that German athletes woulddominate the games with victories. Owens countered this by winning four goldmedals.
