In 1950s LosAngeles, the second woman Laura Brown who is supposed to be happy because shehas an adorable son, Richie, a husband, Dan who loves her very much and mostimportantly, she’s pregnant. Everything appears perfect. But Laura doesn’tderive the happiness from her domestic life. She feels she has a duty andobligation to her husband, but she doesn’t reciprocate his feelings for her. Thenovel Mrs. Dalloway which Laura read implies her own unhappyexistence. She even tries to abandon her son and commit suicide, and she ultimatelychooses to leave.

Leonard tries to make sure that Virginia eats regularly, gets enough sleep,and doesn’t become upset. He panics when she disappears from the house and goesto the train station. He has moved her from Londonto the suburb of Richmondso that she can recuperate. Though Virginialoves Leonard and appreciates his efforts to care for her, she feels that hisattempts to manage her life are restrictive and stifling. She longs to returnto London andsometimes resents Leonard’s attempts to act as her caregiver.

Dan Brown who everfought in the war is a typical American husband who leads typical American lifeof 1950s with wife, kids, house and cars. He loves his wife, Laura, but doesn’tunderstand her. He doesn’t know that his wife sees him as another child,someone who depends on her for stability and comfort. He takes deep pride andsatisfaction in his job, his home, and his family. Much of his happiness comesfrom Laura’s fulfillment of her roles as wife and mother.

Richard Brown servesan important role in both the Clarissa’s and Laura’s sections. He is afrustrated poet who lives in a humble apartment with crippled body. He loveshis mother, Laura, deeply understands her thoughts and emotions more than sherealizes. When she comes to comprehend the extent of his empathy, she feelsstartled and starts to see the potential repercussions of her unhappiness.Richard’s awareness may be one of the factors that motivate her to leave herfamily. As an adult, Richard transfers his observant interest to Clarissa.Though he has a long-term relationship with Louis, Clarissa is his primaryinspiration and the emotional centerpiece of his novel. He relies on her as acaretaker and mother figure, and he draws great strength from her childlikeappreciation of the world. Clarissa functions as a substitute for the motherfigure that Richard lost as a child.
