Background Information
The Da Vinci Code isa 2006 American mystery thriller film directed by Ron Howard, written by Akiva Goldsman, and based on Dan Brown’ s 2003 best-selling novel of the same name. The first in the RobertLangdon film series, the film stars Tom Hanks, AudreyTautou, Ian McKellen, Alfred Molina, Jürgen Prochnow, Jean Reno and PaulBettany. In the film, RobertLangdon, a professor of religious iconography andsymbology from Harvard University, is the prime suspect in thegrisly and unusual murder of Louvre curator Jacques Saunière. In the body, thepolice finds a disconcerting cipher and starts an investigation.A noted British Grail historian named Sir LeighTeabing tells them that the actual Holy Grail is explicitly encoded in Leonardoda Vinci’ s wallpainting, The Last Supper. Alsosearching for the Grail is a secret cabal within Opus Dei, anactual prelature ofthe HolySee, who wishes to keep the true Grail a secret; the revelation of this secret would certainlydestroy Christianity.
The film, like the book, was considered controversial. It wasmet with especially harsh criticism by the Roman Catholic Church for theaccusation that it is behind a two-thousand-year-old cover-up concerning whatthe Holy Grail really is and the concept that Jesus Christ and MaryMagdalene were married and that the union produced a daughter. Manymembers urged the laity to boycott the film. Two organizations, the Prioryof Sion and Opus Dei figure prominently in the story. In thebook, Dan Brown claims that the Priory of Sion and “...all descriptions of artwork, architecture, documents and secret rituals in this novel are accurate”. The film grossed $224 million in its worldwideopening weekend and a total of $758 million worldwide, becoming the secondhighest-grossing film of 2006 behind Pirates of the Caribbean:Dead Man' s Chest. Itwas followed by two sequels, Angels & Demons (2009)and Inferno (2016).
This novel brings about an unprecedented, aestheticeffect. The reinterpretation of the Holy Grail is like a bomb exploding in thefield of theology, and in the mean time, it has aroused the interest of historiansas well as culture researchers. In the book, Dan Brown deconstructs the Biblefor the interests of women. Thinking profoundly over the patriarchal traditionand seeking for the truth about the Holy Grail, the author relates a different storyof the Holy Grail and reflects the submissive position of women. Although thenovel contains some legendary elements, it reveals all indispensable role ofwomen in the male—dominated Christianity. It can be seen that Dan Brown holdsthe view in accordance with the feminist theologians on the goddess Worship in religion.
For a long time, the women’ s position inthe church has been the focus of feminist theology. Drawing on the traditional interpretationof the Bible through patriarchal ideology, it is proposed that women’ s marginalposition is the very reflection of women’ s lack of discourse power in religion. This novel offers a creative explanation of the lack of women’ s discourse inreligion in light of the feminist theology.
The main conflict in the novel revolves around the solution to twomysteries:
1. What secret was Saunière protecting that led to his murder?
2. Who is the mastermind behind his murder and the murder of the three othersénéchaux (keepers of the secrets of the grail)?
The novel has several concurrentstorylines that follow different characters throughout different parts of thebook. Eventually all the storylines and characters are brought together andresolved in its denouement. The unraveling of the mystery requires the solutionto a series of brain-teasers, including anagrams and number puzzles. Thesolution itself is found to be intimately connected with the possible locationof the Holy Grail and to a mysterious society called the Priory of Sion, aswell as to the Knights Templar. The story also involves the Catholicorganization Opus Dei.
The novel is the second book of atrilogy by Brown in which Robert Langdon is the main character. The previousbook, Angels and Demons, took place in Rome and concerned the Illuminati.Although Angels and Demons is centered on the same character it is notnecessary to read the book in order to understand the plot of The Da VinciCode. The next book is tentatively scheduled for release in 2007. Its working title is The Solomon Key, and it is understood to concern Free masonry.
