Race is a 2016 biographicalsports drama film about African American athlete Jesse Owens, who won arecord-breaking four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games.
On a morning in 1935 Owens leaves for Ohio State University, he bids farewell to hisfamily. He goes out of his way to Ida’s Beauty Salon where Ruth Solomon worksto say goodbye to her and their daughter, Gloria.
At the national sportsmeet, Larry Snyder is mocked by the winner’s coach for another failure in hiscareer. This previous successful athlete, now the track and field coach of OhioState University, wants a prospective medalist. Owens’ information draws hisattention. Larry asks Jesse to see him in his office. He tells him to work towin at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
Outside Hotel Commodorein New York, people protest against participating in the 1936 Olympics. AveryBrundage enters the building to attend the US Olympic Committee Convention.After a heated discussion he is assigned to see in person what is happening inBerlin. There on the street he sees Jewish people arrested and taken away intrucks. While in Berlin, Avery is presented to Goebbels and argues that therestrictive edicts should be sanitized. In order to get America’s support,Goebbels agrees to it.
Larry finds Jesse awell-paid job so that he can concentrate on training. He trains Jesse to startin a low posture. Some nearby football players belittle them. Later in thelocker room in the presence the football players and their coach Larry tellsJesse to take no notice of anyone’s noise and count on himself.
Back home Jesse gets hisleg hurt when he tries high jump. Larry is worried about his performance at theBig Ten meet of 1935. To everyone’s surprise, Owens makes great achievements atFerry Field, where he sets three world records and ties a fourth. After aracing tour and a love affair with Quincella, Jesse and Ruth get married.
Jeremiah Mahoney and AveryBrundage debate over the US Olympic vote. There was one more vote forparticipating in the Olympics. Larry is excited reading the news that Americais to compete in the 1936 Olympics.
When Owens and Ruth gethome, they find Davis in the house who has come to persuade him on behalf ofthe NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) not togo to the Olympics. Owens is about to quit and Larry is angry about hishesitance.
In 1936, Owens and hisUnited States teammates arrives in Berlin to compete at the Summer Olympics. InGermany, Owens is allowed to travel with and stay in the same hotels as whites,at a time when African Americans in many parts of the United States have tostay in segregated hotels.
After Owens wins his firstgold medal Avery takes him to where Hitler is supposed to congratulate thewinners only to find that he has left earlier. Owens beats Lutz Long, the Germancompetitor in the long jump with a leap of 8.06 m. He thanks Luz for thetechnical advice he gave him. Goebbels offers cooperative opportunity to Averyand makes the latter stop the two Jewish relay runners on the US Olympic Squadfrom competing. Owens wins his fourth gold medal in the 4 × 100 m sprint relayafter coach Dean Cromwell replaced Jewish-American sprinters Marty Glickman andSam Stoller with Owens and Ralph Metcalfe, who team up with Frank Wykoff and FoyDraper to set a world record of 39.8 s in the event.
Owens’ victory isdocumented by Leni Riefenstahl. Back home Owens and his wife have to take theservice entrance to the party held in his honor.
