1. Jay Gatsby 杰伊·盖茨比
Jay Gatsby is awealthy man who rose from a poor childhood. He was once the lover of Daisy, butleft her to serve in the war. After the war, Gatsby devotes himself blindly tothe pursuit of wealth by whatever means available to him with a view toregaining Daisy’s love. With huge wealth accumulated, Gatsby buys mansionacross Long Island from Daisy’s noble East Eggaddress. Throws generous parties, and waits for Daisy to appear. Whenshe does, events which lead to his death carry up with all the tragicinevitability of a greed dream.
2. Daisy Buchanan 黛西·布坎南
Daisy Buchanan is Nick’scousin and the woman Jay Gatsby loves. Before the war, Daisy fell in love withGatsby and promised to wait for him. However, when a wealthy, powerful youngman named Tom Buchanan asked her to marry him, Daisy decided not to wait forGatsby after all. Now a beautiful socialite, Daisy lives with Tom across fromGatsby in the fashionable East Egg district of Long Island. She is sardonic andsomewhat cynical, and behaves superficially to mask her pain at her husband’sconstant infidelity.
3. NickCarraway 尼克·卡拉韦
He is the narratorin the film and the Great Gatsby is told entirely through Nick’s eyes. He is thecousin of Daisy Buchanan and Gatsby’s next-door neighbor. He graduated from Yale Universityand served in World War I. He is a newly arrived resident of West Egg and comesto New York Cityto learn the bond business.
4. TomBuchanan 汤姆·布坎南
Tom Buchanan is Daisy’simmensely wealthy husband, once a member of Nick’s social club at Yale.Powerfully built and hailing from a socially solid old family, Tom is anarrogant, hypocritical bully. His social attitudes are laced with racism andsexism, and he never even considers trying to live up to the moral standard hedemands from those around him. He has no moral qualms about his ownextramarital affair with Myrtle, but when he begins to suspect Daisy and Gatsbyof having an affair, he becomes outraged and forces a confrontation.
5.Myrtle Wilson 玛特尔·威尔逊
MyrtleWilson is Tom’s lover, whose lifeless husbandGeorge owns a run-down garage in the valley of ashes. Myrtle herself possessesa fierce vitality and desperately looks for a way to improve her situation.Unfortunately for her, she chooses Tom, who treats her as a mere object of hisdesire.
6.George Wilson 乔治·威尔逊
GeorgeWilson is Myrtle’s husband, the lifeless, exhausted owner of a run-down autoshop at the edge of the Valley of Ashes. He loves andidealizes Myrtle and is devastated by her affair with Tom. He is consumed withgrief when Myrtle is killed. George is comparable to Gatsby in that both are dreamers and both are ruinedby their unrequited love for women who love Tom.
7. Jordan Baker 乔丹·贝克
Jordan Baker is Daisy’s friend, a woman with whom Nick becomes romantically
involved. A competitive golfer, Jordan represents one of the “new women” of the 1920s—cynical, boyish, and self-centered. Jordan is beautiful, but also dishonest:she cheated in order to win her first golf tournament and continually bends the
truth.
